If you wanted to be a rider for the Pony Express you have to be good at riding horses, good with guns and know the route of the Pony Express. Also here are some qualifications to be a rider on a newspaper ad. The newspaper in California read: "Wanted. Young, skinny, wiry fellows. Not over 18, Must be expert riders. Willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred." Most riders were around 20. Youngest was 11. Oldest was mid-40s. Not many were orphans. The riders usually weighed around 120 pounds. |
