Another usage of hot air balloons is to communicate weather data to the Meteorologists. A balloon is sent up into the air with data gathering equipment on board. It gathers data such as atmospheric pressure and wind speed. The data gathered is used by the Meteorologist to anticipate potentially life and property threatening storms. They then communicate the situation to the public which allows them to take preventive measures to ensure that preventable damage does not occur.
