Today, the Shoshone Indians live on the Wind River reservation in Wyoming.  It covers over 2.2 million acres of land and is the third largest in the United States.  Chief Washakie lead his people, the Shoshone, to establish the Wind River Reservation in 1868 under the Fort Bridger Treaty.  The Northern Arapaho Indians settled on the reservation in 1877, while their relatives, the Southern Arapaho, moved to a reservation in western Okalahoma.

When they first came, the Great Basin was wrought with hardships.  It was difficult to find food, water, and shelter.  They were originally a nomadic people.  They did not own very much, and didn't trade until they obtained horses, which was in the 1700's.
