 The Writing on the Stone

Text Box: Hieroglyphics is a common Egyptian writing. It was used by many Egyptians in the ancient times. The hieroglyphics is the top script on the Rosetta stone, and has the biggest letters. This script was developed four thousand years Before Christ. There was also a decimal system of numeration up to a million. The difference between hieroglyphics and our regular vocabulary is that hieroglyphics use ‘pictograms’. That means they use pictures as opposed to letters.

The Demotic script is the middle piece of writing on the Rosetta stone. The Demotic was considered as the popular language. It lasted for about 1000 years. The Demotic belongs to the last period of ancient Egyptian history. It is a simplified version of Hieroglyphics. In the beginning of the 4th century, Demotics took over Greek writing. In the 5th century, the Demotic was used all over Egypt. It looked fancy and cursive.

Finally, the Greek script, which is at the bottom of the Rosetta stone. The Greek alphabet has been in continuous use for the past 2,750 years or so since about 750 BC. At first, the Greek language was used in various ways in different cities. For example, the color of the script was different (blue, red, green…)
