Conclusion/Analysis
Due to the oppressive and inhumane manner in which they were treated, African American slaves needed an outlet for their frustration, a form of consolation and comfort in times of despair, and a method of uniting inconspicuously. The media of music was unique in that it encompassed all of these needs. Discovering how precisely music fulfilled their desires, slaves began to sing, compose, and share spirituals with one another. As a result, a unique and rich genre of music was created. Even today, spirituals can serve a purpose for the common person. By reading lyrics and understanding the context in which they were written, modern individuals can take measures to prevent slavery and similar treatment from taking place in the future. Perhaps unwittingly, a people living over a century ago have communicated to us how vital it is to treat others with respect and equality despite diversity.
